SDG Artistic Director John Nelson
BEETHOVEN: MISSA SOLEMNIS
Chamber Orchestra of Europe/Gulbenkian Choir
John Nelson, conductor

A musical treasure
Writes author Jan Swafford, "The Missa Solemnis may be the greatest piece never heard", noting the work's quiet life in the shadow of the better-known Ninth Symphony. Soli Deo Gloria's forthcoming production promises to shine a supreme light on Beethoven's choral masterpiece and meet the lofty intent of the composer who once commented, "My chief aim when I was composing this grand Mass was to awaken and permanently instill religious feelings, not only in the singers, but also in the listeners."

Whereas Bach scales the highest heights of pure liturgical music with a certain objectivity in his B minor Mass, Beethoven takes a far more personal journey addressing the same text in his Missa Solemnis. Both are Mt. Everest experiences, daunting to say the least. We gratefully conquered the B Minor Mass in a beautiful DVD several years ago. Now it is our privilege to climb the Beethoven mountain...

An audience of millions

Beethoven broadcast on Medici.tv

First, the February 18, 2010 performance will be broadcast worldwide from Lisbon, live and free of charge, via the Internet. This performance is now available in its entirety as video-on-demand at http://www.medici.tv/#/performance/585/ and will remain free through July 31, 2009. A trilogy of masterworks

Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis is the first of three sacred masterworks thus scheduled for sponsorship, broadcast and DVD production. Subsequent installments include Haydn's The Creation and Bach's St. Matthew Passion. Stay tuned for details.

The Threshold Bookcast : Chapter 13 : Keys To Ascension

Chapter 13 : Keys To AscensionRahu Lüli, the teenage monk from Kõrgus, is once again the central character of the weekly instalment of the Threshold Bookcast. This time, we find the novice reminiscing as he explores unknown territory uphill, following a hunch that has occurred to him prior to the morning ritual. « « Gazing up, the apprentice had detected an odd detail. Rossini: Feminist Crusader

Taconic Opera will be presenting a fully orchestrated mass in June by the famed composer, Gioacchino Rossini, widely known for his comedic operas like The Barber of Seville and, of course, the universally recognizable overture from his opera William Tell.  However, this is not just any Mass: it has a very remarkable historical component that would be of interest to both music historians and women everywhere.  The Petite Messe Solennelle (small solemn mass) was originally written to feature…See More

Maryland Choral Society: Dona Nobis Pacem at Mount Calvary Catholic Church

May 20, 2012 from 4pm to 7pm
Ralph Vaughan Williams's Dona Nobis Pacem, written in the years just prior to the outbreak of World War II, blends the poetry of Walt Whitman with the cry for peace ("Dona nobis pacem") embodied within the Agnus Dei of the traditional Latin mass. It is a piece of tremendous drama, emotional scope, and eloquence, and it has much wisdom to offer to us and the world in which we live. The Maryland Choral Society will perform the piece in the rarely-heard version for strings and piano, a reduced…See More
