Thank you for asking Julian- I'd be happy to sing a solo with your group in the fall. Let me know what, where, and when and I will do my best to prepare for you.I teach in Florence, but I don't teach music. I didn't go to school for music. My degrees are in Psychology (B.S. from FMU 1978),Generic Special Education (B.A. from Coker 1993) and Education (M.Ed from Cambridge College 2004).I teach students with profound mental disabilities and I also teach students from the general population how to work with them(service learning).I love music. Let me share some links with you:http://www.charlestoncathedralmusic.org/ and http://www.visitstpeters.org/music.htm. These are wonderful singing environments in Charleston and Columbia. If you get a chance to go to Spoleto, check out the Cathedral of St John the Baptist on Broad Street- and in Columbia, St Peter's is at the corner of Taylor and Assembly Streets. On another note,I've been attending the worship and music conference in Montreat,NC for the past couple of years and worked with Sigrid Johnson (St Olaf Choir College Minnesota) two years ago-http://www.singers.com/choral/director/sigrid_johnson.html
what a wonderful conductor. She was enthusiastic, happy about music and so accurate! I sang in two choirs with her- a small chamber group and an adult choir of 600-and she was tuned to the needs of both groups- it was amazing.I learn from each person I work with!I'm looking forward to hearing from you again.

Julian, I tried to chat with you, but missed you- I've been a choral singer for quite some time now-I've sung with St Anthony's choir in Florence,SC;St Peter's Choir in Columbia,SC and the Cathedral of St John the Baptist in Charleston,SC(I went on a choir tour of Italy with them). I currently sing in Central's Chancel choir and Masterworks Choir of Florence,SC. I'm also a cantor at St Anthony's and occasionally sing with the choir there (holidays and funerals).I've worked with a variety of talented directors: Robert Clayton, Bill Schlitt, Bill Mills, Mark Thomas, Jerrold Tidwell, Mark Husey, and Susan Gerth as well as in pick-up choirs in choral workshops at St Johns Episcopal Church; Robert J Powell, Dr. J.Scott Bennett, Dr.James Biery and Erik Figueris. I was trained by sopranos Marian Manwiller, Sue Butler Mills Orr at Francis Marion, and (most recently)Serena Hill (soon to be Dr. Serena Hill) at Coker from Columbia,SC. I attended a workshop on Gregorian chant this past January that was conducted by Michael Olbash and Mark Husey at St Peter's in Columbia,SC.Prior to my involvement in church choirs, I sang folk music into a microphone and played guitar for about 22 years, so you can imagine what I had to undo before I could get serious. I think we may have some of the aformentioned people in common. We have sung together here at Central.

Julian, I', sorry to be just now responding to your thoughtful message. I don't think I've been back to this page since the day it was created. Nashville Singers is doing fine. We've had ten meetings so far, are averaging about nine men per meeting and have seven singers so far. The event you were describing sounds interesting. Tell me more. I will be traveling through SC on business the week of April 6-10. Hilton Head, Charleston, Columbia, etc. Where is Florence?

I actually enjoy the seasonal choir. I feel much better about utilizing them when they fit the needs of the service rather than trying to "make the medium" fit every week. It has opened up time for other music venues, and many smaller ensembles which in the long run is producing better quality musicians individually. Thanks for sharing about your choir. God's richest blessings on your service to him and the Kingdom.

Hi Julian: We are a choir of about 40 singers who do a variety of music. Currently working on Christmas music and Rutter's Requiem for Good Friday. Thanks for the contact!

Juliaan,
I moved to Mountain Home Idaho from The Woodlands Texas a couple of years ago. It was a hard move. We loved The Woodlands and didn't really want to leave, but circumstances dictated otherwise.
Mountain Home is a small rural community outside of Boise. Many of the people are from the Air Force base. Sadly, our church has a revolving door every two years or so. Many of the faces in the choir are short lived. Basically, I utilized the choir for special, mostly seasonal functions. It is easier to get commitment for a few months at a time than for an ongoing full-time choir. Choir here is only about 20-30 depending on the season and current attendance.
Thanks for taking an insterest. Would enjoy hearing about what your doing.

Todd Ferring
