Choral Director as Transformational Leader

As a person of influence, the choral director a unique opportunity to influence many people. The primary influence we have is that of the transformation of singers into a choir and then the transformation of the choir into an ensemble.

We, as a choral professional influence people in many ways - musically and in non-music settings. We influence people positively or negatively. Discernment is a key leadership skill. Framing our comments and actions in ways that create the desired results is what sets us apart as exceptional from those who are ordinary. We empower, enable, and inspire excellence as leaders in both musical and non-music situations.

I'm guilty of saying things that confuse people and convey a message that brings a response that is not desired. When I get a negative result, it's time for self awareness and a personal upgrade of my skills and abilities. What is your process? As a person of influence, the choral director stands apart from the pack - we know how to get things done, we know how to influence people, and we get things done - a lot of things. Pastors and school administrators could learn from us. Let's be constantly aware of how much influence we have - with everyone.

I am a singer, not a director.  I have sung in many choral groups and in all of those groups, the director has warmed us up.  Lately I sing in a church choir in San Diego, and the director NEVER warms up the choir.  Isn't that part of a director's job?
