Event Description

Please note: this is an on-going invitation effective immediately until June 30, 2015.  There is no specific date and time to join; if an audition is required, it will be arranged to suit the applicant’s schedule.

For choral singers who are interested in a new, unique and exciting experience, Taconic Opera invites you to participate in the company’s fall double-bill production, a first-time-ever drama/comedy combination that will make you both cry and laugh: Ruggero Leoncavallo’s tearful Pagilacci, along with a classic Gilbert & Sullivan comedic romp, Trial by Jury.  BOTH have amazing and wonderful choral parts.  These short operas were chosen to particularly feature the chorus, and both chorus members and leads will have a wonderful time preparing for and performing these wonderful works. To be performed on Oct. 15, 17 and 18, 2015 at the Yorktown Stage in Yorktown Heights, NY.

Pagliacci, a drama, is the classic tale of a love triangle among street circus performers which ends tragically as a result of jealousy. In spite of its sad ending, the street and circus scenes involving the chorus are bright and engaging, the music is beautiful and it has universal appeal.  Pagliacci will be performed in Italian with English supertitles for the audience.

Trial by Jury, a comedy, is the perfect antidote to Pagliacci.  This opera is a classic Gilbert & Sullivan tale having a totally unbelievable plot, with characters acting as though everything were perfectly normal.  In this story, a man is being brought to trial by his wife for leaving her, and he has to plead his case to a jury that has already been advised by the court clerk that the man is guilty – before the trial even starts.  Like most of G&S’s works, this short opera pokes fun at the hypocrisy and arrogance of the social elite and people in power.  Trial by Jury will be performed in English.

Rehearsals will begin on Saturday, June 13 and take place on Wednesdays from 7:00-8:45 pm and Saturdays from 3:00-4:45 pm at the Cortlandt School of Performing Arts, 24 Old Albany Post Road, Croton-On-Hudson, NY.  Experienced choral singers do not require an audition. There are no fees to join the chorus, but members must secure their own music and, if applying early, may be able to participate in special group prices for the scores that are arranged for chorus members.

Requests to participate in the chorus will be considered effective immediately until June 30.  New members may be accepted after June 30 based on their experience and musical abilities.  Singers who have a conflict with the complete rehearsal schedule may likewise be accepted based on experience and ability.  For further information, contact Mary Corda: divamaryc@aol.com or call 914-649-1826.  Visit the website at http://www.taconicopera.org.
