Event Description

Schola Cantorum on Hudson (SCH), the critically acclaimed choral ensemble, presents its annual Ethnic Celebration Series concert entitled the "American Melting Pot" highlighting works of composers who have immigrated to the United States. Dr. Deborah Simpkin King, the ensemble’s artistic director and founder, will conduct. Dr. King comments, "A uniquely American musical voice emerged from the influences of many nations. This program embodies the international flair and vitality of this great American melting pot. The hope and optimism that continue to bring immigrants to our shores pervade the music in this concert.”

The program showcases this season's Cantorum Young Singers (CYS), the Wagner College Choir, directed by Dr. Roger Wesby. SCH and CYS will perform choral works representing many distinctly American genres—Appalachian folk songs, spirituals, jazz, musical theater—and many immigrant languages—English, Latin, Greek, Spanish, Samoan, and Shona—a Bantu language spoken in Zimbabwe. Among the popular favorites are “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” “Down in the River to Pray,” “Blue Skies,” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So.” This season’s featured composer, Dr. Wesby will guest conduct
a number of pieces, and his arrangements such as “Lost in the Stars,” “Uyai Mose” (“Come All Ye People”), and “Sweet Cane” (“Caña Dulce”), will figure prominently amid the works of luminary composers Carol Barnett, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Max Lifchitz, Sheena Phillips, and Kurt Weill.

The program will be performed at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 3 West
65th Street (at Central Park West), Manhattan, and again at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 440 Hoboken Avenue (near Five Corners) in Jersey City, New Jersey.

All tickets are priced at $15 in honor of the organization’s fifteenth anniversary season. Advance tickets may be purchased online at ScholaOnHudson.org, by phone at (201) 918-
3011, or by email at BoxOffice@ScholaOnHudson.org. Groups interested in purchasing a block of ten or more tickets may email GroupSales@ScholaOnHudson.org for more
information on special rates. Additional information regarding the ensemble and its activities can be obtained online at ScholaOnHudson.org or by calling (201) 918-3011.

The Threshold Bookcast : Chapter 13 : Keys To Ascension

Chapter 13 : Keys To AscensionRahu Lüli, the teenage monk from Kõrgus, is once again the central character of the weekly instalment of the Threshold Bookcast. This time, we find the novice reminiscing as he explores unknown territory uphill, following a hunch that has occurred to him prior to the morning ritual. « « Gazing up, the apprentice had detected an odd detail. Something was decidedly wrong about the view, and it couldn't but have a meaning. Over the years, the pitch black walls of…See More

Rossini: Feminist Crusader

Taconic Opera will be presenting a fully orchestrated mass in June by the famed composer, Gioacchino Rossini, widely known for his comedic operas like The Barber of Seville and, of course, the universally recognizable overture from his opera William Tell.  However, this is not just any Mass: it has a very remarkable historical component that would be of interest to both music historians and women everywhere.  The Petite Messe Solennelle (small solemn mass) was originally written to feature…See More

The Threshold Bookcast : Chapter 11 : The Preacher The Teacher

Chapter 11 : The Preacher The TeacherThis week's instalment of The Threshold Series revolves around Bernard Sturn and features Veshtar, the almost barren land also known as the radioactive planet. As the chapter begins, the illustrious physicist is enjoying a cup of green tea in his office, reviewing the events of the day while he waits for his newly hired assistant, Frank Evans, to join him for an informal evening meeting. « At the beginning of the morning, Daniel Milton had sent him a long…See More

Maryland Choral Society: Dona Nobis Pacem at Mount Calvary Catholic Church

May 20, 2012 from 4pm to 7pm
Ralph Vaughan Williams's Dona Nobis Pacem, written in the years just prior to the outbreak of World War II, blends the poetry of Walt Whitman with the cry for peace ("Dona nobis pacem") embodied within the Agnus Dei of the traditional Latin mass. It is a piece of tremendous drama, emotional scope, and eloquence, and it has much wisdom to offer to us and the world in which we live. The Maryland Choral Society will perform the piece in the rarely-heard version for strings and piano, a reduced…See More
