Event Description

  • Vivaldi's Magnificat, as originally performed by women's voices
  • Dvořák's Largo, part of NY Phil 175th Anniversary New World Symphony
  • U.S. Premiere of Seven Blake Songs by Rudi Tas & Ütle Sina (Tell Me) by Tonu Kõrvits

Melodia Women’s Choir, New York’s premier ensemble for women’s choral music led by artistic director Cynthia Powell, announces Autumn Rhapsody, a program for audiences eager to experience Antonio Vivaldi’s Magnificat performed in its original version for women’s voices. Listeners will also encounter music from contemporary composers Eleanor Daley, Ola Gjeilo, and be the first to hear the U.S. premiere of Rudi Tas's Seven Blake Songs, and the New York premiere of Tõnu Kõrvits's Ütle Sina (Tell Me).

Melodia will also perform a historic vocal arrangement of the Largo from Dvořák’s New World Symphony as part of the NY Philharmonic’s 175th Anniversary New World Initiative. The arrangement was created by Margaret Dryburgh and Norah Chambers for a performance by and for women POWs held by Japanese forces in a WWII internment camp in Sumatra. With this performance, Melodia pays tribute to the women who sang to survive the cruelties of war, and to those who sing to create a better world everywhere.

Melodia Women’s Choir led by Cynthia Powell, Taisiya Pushkar (piano), and an all-female string quintet.

The New World Initiative is a season-long, city-wide project revolving around Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World, and its theme of “home.” Melodia is one of the New York City–based performing ensembles participating in performances and reinterpretations of the New World Symphony with the powerful arrangement of Largo, as created by Margaret Dryburgh and Norah Chambers for a performance by and for women POWs held in a Japanese Internment camp during WWII. Dryburgh and Chamber’s arrangement of the Dvořák piece is part of the inspiring collection Song of Survival.

Cynthia Powell celebrates her 14th season with Melodia. A graduate of Westminster Choir College, she has served on the guest faculty at Sarah Lawrence College, led the St. George’s Choral Society in NYC, and
was a guest conductor at the International Choral Festival in Havana, Cuba. She is also the Artistic Director of the Stonewall Chorale, and currently serves as Director of Music and Organist at West End Collegiate Church in NYC, and Organist/Choirmaster of Temple Sinai in Tenafly, NJ.

Testing the Waters

Hi,I have had an account here for sometime, but it has not been active. I woke it up tonight by adding tracks and videos for many of my published choral works. ( I hope you enjoy them, and to hear from a choral director in this community who is interested in programming any of these works, or in my composing or arranging music for him or her anew. Thank you.Cheers,Stanley M. Hoffman, Ph.D.…See More
