2011-12 SEASON OVERVIEW

In December, we celebrate the holiday season with a performance the Vivaldi Gloria, with chamber orchestra and soloists. One of the true high points in Vivaldi's prolific output, the Gloria conveys the unprecedented joy and drama of that magical moment in the Christmas story when the angels bring their greetings to the shepherds. In the second half of the December concert, we will intersperse chorales from the Bach Christmas Oratorio with solo and choral movements from Part III of Handel's great oratorio, Judas Maccabaeus. Part III of the Handel focuses on the institution of Hanukkah by Judas Maccabaeus, and the movements selected from each piece focus on images of light, joy, and peace common to both Christmas and Hanukkah.

On April 22, 2012 the Maryland Choral Society has partnered with Earth Day Networks to celebrate Earth Day with a performance of Paul Winter's Missa Gaia.  This eclectic and exuberant piece combines a contemporary setting of the Mass with sounds drawn from nature (wolf calls, whale songs, sounds of the sea, and more). The Missa Gaia blends these sounds with influences from the worlds of jazz, gospel, African, and Brazilian music. Originally written as the service music for the annual Blessing of the Animals at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York (where it is still performed every year on St. Francis Sunday), the piece has taken on a life of its own as a concert work. We will be joined for this performance by singers from other area choruses, several Grammy award winning vocal organizations, Paul Halley (co-writer of the Missa Gaia) and the Keramion Ensemble Band.

We conclude the season with a performance of Vaughan Williams's Dona Nobis Pacem.  This piece, written in the years just prior to the outbreak of World War II, blends the poetry of Walt Whitman with the cry for peace ("Dona nobis pacem") embodied within the Agnus Dei.   This piece will be performed in a rarely-heard version for strings and piano, a reduced orchestration made by the composer himself.

The Threshold Bookcast : Chapter 13 : Keys To Ascension

Chapter 13 : Keys To AscensionRahu Lüli, the teenage monk from Kõrgus, is once again the central character of the weekly instalment of the Threshold Bookcast. This time, we find the novice reminiscing as he explores unknown territory uphill, following a hunch that has occurred to him prior to the morning ritual. « « Gazing up, the apprentice had detected an odd detail. Something was decidedly wrong about the view, and it couldn't but have a meaning. Over the years, the pitch black walls of…See More

Rossini: Feminist Crusader

Taconic Opera will be presenting a fully orchestrated mass in June by the famed composer, Gioacchino Rossini, widely known for his comedic operas like The Barber of Seville and, of course, the universally recognizable overture from his opera William Tell.  However, this is not just any Mass: it has a very remarkable historical component that would be of interest to both music historians and women everywhere.  The Petite Messe Solennelle (small solemn mass) was originally written to feature…See More

Chapter 11 : The Preacher The TeacherThis week's instalment of The Threshold Series revolves around Bernard Sturn and features Veshtar, the almost barren land also known as the radioactive planet. As the chapter begins, the illustrious physicist is enjoying a cup of green tea in his office, reviewing the events of the day while he waits for his newly hired assistant, Frank Evans, to join him for an informal evening meeting. « At the beginning of the morning, Daniel Milton had sent him a long…See More

Maryland Choral Society: Dona Nobis Pacem at Mount Calvary Catholic Church

May 20, 2012 from 4pm to 7pm
Ralph Vaughan Williams's Dona Nobis Pacem, written in the years just prior to the outbreak of World War II, blends the poetry of Walt Whitman with the cry for peace ("Dona nobis pacem") embodied within the Agnus Dei of the traditional Latin mass. It is a piece of tremendous drama, emotional scope, and eloquence, and it has much wisdom to offer to us and the world in which we live. The Maryland Choral Society will perform the piece in the rarely-heard version for strings and piano, a reduced…See More
